What to expect on your infusion day
Ketamine infusions will be performed at our office as an out-patient procedure. You will be required to fast for 4 hours before the infusion. (Clear liquids are allowed up until 2 hours before your appointment.) Upon arrival at our facility, we will review your treatment plan with you, perform a pre-assessment, and answer any questions you may have before starting the infusion.
Infusion Procedure
A small catheter will be used to start the IV in your hand or arm. The infusion should take approximately 40-45 minutes, during which you will be lying comfortably in a lounge chair. Your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety until the completion of the infusion. After the procedure, we require that you remain at our facility for an additional 20 – 30 minutes for observation before being discharged. Because you may feel fatigued and drowsy immediately after the infusion, a responsible driver must be present to provide transportation for you.
At New Life Wellness and Ketamine Clinic, most patients find the infusion procedure to be a relaxing one. As ketamine is administered in a low, controlled dose, you will remain awake during the procedure and are welcome to bring headphones to listen to music. Some patients also bring a light blanket to keep comfortable. Most side effects of the medication, such as lightheadedness or visual disturbances, typically subside within minutes after the infusion. Patients do tend to feel fatigued for an extended period of time after the infusion, which is why a driver is required. There is no need to refrain from eating or drinking after treatment.
Most patients experience symptom relief for 1-2 months following the initial cycle of infusions, with some patients experiencing relief for up to 6 months. Single booster infusions are scheduled when needed to maintain symptom relief. In addition to infusions, we also offer injections, oral/lozenges, nasal spray, and Spravato.
